Many people impacted by the murder and involved in the case believe Joe should be a free man. Jurors, the Boston Globe Editorial Board, journalists, community members, even the family of Yngve Raustein are in favor of Joe’s release.
Included in those is Judge Robert Barton, who presided over Donovan’s trial. In 2010 he wrote a letter to the Advisory Board of Pardons in support of commuting Donovan’s sentence. Barton wrote that the sentence he was required to impose on Donovan “was unjust and excessive” and that he believed it was the responsibility of the Board and the Governor to “undo the injustice.” Read Barton’s letter here.
